80/20

Seeing Facebook as a platform for spreading the word about your product news is definitely an option. But first and foremost, think of the platform and your Facebook page as a channel to build your brand on. Facebook users rarely choose pages they follow based on their product and deals, however fun or cool they may be in your opinion. It is important to create content that has value for your followers. If a company sells skis for example, the focus can be on telling the followers about the ten most affordable ski trips or sharing short interviews with the cool skiers who uses their company's products. By mixing up the content this brand will surely stand out when their followers are going to buy skis. A general guideline is to think 80 percent content that has value for your followers and 20 percent product news or pure sales posts.

If possible, go for the videos!

There has been a lot of talk about the video format on Facebook and how it has grown stronger and stronger for several years now. But there is great truth in that. The future is clearly laid out for video production when it comes to content. The trend is a much shorter copy and more focus on the short video format. In a Facebook feed, a short video (15 - 30 sec max) is something that is both prioritized by Facebook's algorithms and causes users to stop their scrolling to spend some extra seconds on your ad. It is also important that your message is communicated as soon as possible when the film starts. Generally, we watch videos in the stream for about 3 seconds before deciding to scroll further or continue watching. With a short and interesting video, you have clearly laid the foundation for people's interest.

Competitions - not always the best option

Many times, it's easy to consider contests and giveaways when thinking about how to attract new followers. Everybody likes prizes and free stuff, right? Competitions are clearly a way to attract new followers short term, but they often have a tendency to start following you just for the giveaway. In other words, these followers are not really genuinely interested in your brand and are the wrong followers to communicate with. Often, many of these followers also end up unfollowing or unliking your site unless the competitions continue. Sure, competitions are good, but it is important to mix it with other content as well. Don't make competitions a habit when it comes to finding new followers. In the long run, it is better to have quality and valuable content for those who are actually interested in what you are working on. Then the followers will come anyway!
